Taipei Folk Dance Theatre
was founded in September 1988 by Professor TSAI Li-hua. As the
first professional ethnicdance company in Taiwan, its stated mission
is to promote as well as preserve Taiwan¡¦s varied dance heritage,
especially those originating from ethnic cultures of the island¡¦s
colorful aborigine tribes, in addition to the obvious influence
of Chinese traditional dance.

The company is renowned
for its unique style of traditional Taiwanese folk dance numbers,
based on years of Professor TSAI¡¦s diligent field research
and painstaking recording of music and movements. In preserving
Taiwan¡¦s heritance, she has imbuedit with present day theater
techniques without sacrificing their ethnic characteristics.
Since its founding 18 years ago, the company has presented
many new productions.
These include: ¡§New Face of Fairy
Island¡¨ (1990), ¡§Fairy Island Customs¡¨ (1991),
¡§Ode to Chinese Culture¡¨ (1992), ¡§Dance
for Taiwan¡¨ (1993), ¡§Beauty
ofTaiwanese Music¡¨ (1994), ¡§Buddhist Chants¡¨ (1995),
¡§The Peacock Princess¡¨ (1996) which
is a dance drama, ¡§Special
People, a Different Kind of Dance¡¨ (1997), ¡§The
Obsession of Mandala¡¨ a Buddhist dance drama (2000),
¡§Rite of Dance and Music to My Dreamland¡¨
(2001), ¡§Formosan Music
and Dance¡¨ (2002), ¡§The
Multiplying Sprouting from the buds of Resplendent Classics¡¨
(2003), ¡§Pilgrimage¡¨¡]2004¡^.
The company has presented over 600 performances in more than
40 countries, from Europe, the Americas, Asia, to Africa.
It has received numerous awards in international dance events.
